One of the major downsides to owning an iPad (or iPod, or iPhone) is that you’re stuck with whatever storage your device came with.
If you bought the 16GB version, then that’s your lot, and it doesn’t take much to fill up that space.
On the other hand, Android or Windows Tablets usually come with an SD card slot, giving you up to 32GB at a time, more if you carry multiple cards around with you.
Luckily, US based company AirStash have developed a new device that will provide expanded storage for your iOS device.

The USB dongle combines an SD card reader, a WiFi access point and media streaming software to allow you to playback content on SD cards on your iPad or iPhone.
It’s a novel idea, but it does have some drawbacks. For one, you’d have to pair your iOS device to the AirStash, so couldn’t use WiFi for Internet use at the same time. You also have to carry around another device with you, and it doesn’t exactly look small.

Files are copied to your SD card by connecting the AirStash to your PC or Mac via USB. The built in software on the device then makes the files available to compatible devices that connect via WiFi.
Despite it’s shortcomings, this would be a great advantage to those who travel. You’re no longer confined to the free space on your iOS device for media, you could potentially carry a handful of SD cards with you which gives the potential for instant access to a sizable chunk of your media library.
AirStash don’t go on record with battery life, but we’d expect around 3 to 4 hours of continuous use before it needs recharging, so you could probably squeeze out a couple of feature films in a single sitting.
No word on UK availability either, though we have asked. US pricing is set at $99.
Case-Mate were kind enough to send us a couple of these cases to offer up to our readers as prizes recently. So we thought the least we could do would be to review the Walkabout for them while we were at it.
The Walkabout is a very fine case when compared to some of the others we’ve seen, though it is just that: A case.
We’ve seen others that have doubled as stands, folios or even keyboards, but these are not features that are present here. What you do get is a very high quality “satchel” type case, made of a very nice quality suede leather and assembled to a very high standard.
Our two review models were both flawless in terms of the leather material and the cut and stitching. The Walkabout is only available in a tan finish (no pinks or greens here) but the colour is consistent and appealing to our eyes at least.
There are no marks or writing to be found on the case, save for the small “CM” logo printed into the leather, font and back. The inside of the case is similarly presented, with a fine hide finish ensuring that your iPad remains scratch free. In fact, we actually found that it cleaned the screen up quite nicely in transit, though we wouldn’t swap this method for a good microfiber cloth.
The lid of the case folds down nicely and is held in place with two magnet clips which should prevent your tablet from flying out in transit. We had no problems of this sort whatsoever.
We also noted the care that had been taken around the edges to properly finish the leather to prevent de-lamination or fraying. Unlike some, this is a case that should last as long as your tablet does.
The Walkabout is marketed for the original iPad on Case-Mate’s EU website, but we found it suites the iPad two equally well, though as you can imagine there’s slightly more room for it to rattle around in.
We’ve found the Walkabout available online for around the £20 mark, which is less than Case-Mate suggest it should be sold for. This is likely due to the company (like others) running down their original iPad stock. But, if you have an iPad 2, or other similar sized tablet, this may be a good case for you if you can pick one up before they go out of stock.
Or you can enter our competition to try and win one for yourself (UK readers only).
Original iPad owners have had it slightly rough lately. Not only does the iPad 2 outperform it in pretty much every way, but the number of available accessories for the original iPad has dwindled down to pretty much nothing since the iPad 2′s arrival.
We don’t think that’s fair, so we’ve teamed up with premium case manufacturer Case-Mate to bring our UK readers the chance to win one of three iPad cases from their impressive line-up of made-to-measure cases.
We’ve got two Walkabout leather folio cases to give away, each valued at £69.99 and a single Gelli Checkmate case in blue valued at £39.99.
The Gelli will fit any original iPad, whereas the Walkabout will fit both the original iPad and the iPad 2. Pictures below.

To stand a chance to win one of the three cases available all you have to do is the following:
All valid entries will be put into a hat after the close of the competition and three winners drawn, at random, who we will then Email to arrange delivery of their iPad case.
